The best baby bath products are all natural baby bath products because they do not contain potentially dangerous chemicals. Recent research is revealing potential dangers in most of the popular brands of baby body wash, baby lotions, and shampoos. Many parents are deciding to use natural baby bath products (also called organic baby bath products).
A report released in March 2009 by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics states "Many children's bath products contain chemicals that may cause cancer and skin allergies". This study, which was conducted by an independent lab in California called Analytical Sciences, involved testing 48 of the most popular baby care products. It was discovered that most of the products contained both Formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane. Both of these chemicals are considered potential carcinogens (cancer causing agents) buy many scientist and the Environmental Protection Agency. Formaldehyde has already been banned from use in personal care products in Japan and Sweden. In Europe products that contain formaldehyde with levels over five hundred parts per million must have warning labels. 1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of a chemical process used to make petroleum-based products gentler to the skin. All natural baby products do not contain Formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane.
Besides formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane there has also been recent research into chemicals called phthalates (pronounced thowl-ates). This is a hormone altering chemical that can potentially cause reproductive problems in humans. A 2008 study of babies in Los Angeles and two other cities found high concentrations of phthalates in babies exposed to lotions and shampoos that were not all natural. The scientist found a correlation between the use of baby lotion and the level of phthalates in the babies. Doctor Sathyanarayana of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington lead the study. He stated "the findings suggested that many baby care products contain a variety of phthalates that enter children's bodies through their skin". The scientist stated that the effects of phthalates on humans is uncertain. However previous research suggest exposure to phthalates could reduce testosterone levels in boys and alter reproductive organs. Currently there are no limitations on the use of phthalates in personal care products in the United States. Manufacturers are not even required to list them on ingredients labels.
